Bunny by Mona Awad
A psychedelic fever dream of a book 🐇🔪📓🧁
I finished Bunny by Mona Awad earlier this week and it is easily the weirdest book I’ve ever read. The story follows Samantha, a loner creative writing MFA student as she grows closer to the clique of girls in her cohort called the bunnies as they embark on an ~experimental~ creative project that turns out to be more dark and twisted than imaginable. The closer Samantha gets to the group, the further from reality she strays until everything collapses in a bloody twist.
I admit that for the majority of this book, I had no idea what was going on (which I believe is intentional). The more you read, the more you question what’s real as the reader, causing you to feel as disconnected to the plot as our main character is to reality. The writing was quite brilliant and if you plan on reading, go into it with an open mind and be prepared to feel disoriented. Things will get weird, and then they’ll get weirder than you imagined possible.
In all, this book is a labyrinth that explores feelings of loneliness, confusion, and a insatiable desire to belong.
TW: this book probably isn’t the right choice if you are currently in a bad or anxious headspace. There is body horror, drug-induced psychosis, and graphic gore depicted.
